Rappers play rhythmic word games, write poetic texts and are certainly the hippest and most modern form of bards. Under the heading of “RAP – Rhythm And Poetry”, the 43rd edition of Germany’s biggest free open air festival in Nuremberg’s Old Town will focus on rhythmic speech and its very many and diverse forms in musical culture.

“In our minds, today’s rappers fulfil the same functions as singer-songwriters of the past: questioning social conditions with wit and commenting on them critically”, says artistic director, Rainer Pirzkall. “This makes Bardentreffen more topical than ever, but still firmly rooted in tradition.”

The line-up includes German-speaking representatives of the rap scene, such as Käptn Peng & Die Tentakel von Delphi, Fiva x JRBB, Goldroger, Austrian Yasmo & Die Klangkantine - nominated for an Amadeus Award, as well as Swiss chart toppers Lo & Leduc. International guests performing sung speech include 47Soul from the Middle East, N3rdistan from Morocco, Baloji from the Congo and the special project initiated for Bardentreffen with Gael Gälin Ellen MacDonald & Daimh who combine Scottish mouth-music with modern rap.

Music without walls and without frontiers. As ever, entrance for the Bardentreffen will be free, thanks to sponsors, such as Sparda-Bank Nürnberg. So, in keeping with the principles of a cooperative bank, the world music festival will be a cultural experience for everyone, without restrictions.

Every visitor can support the unique character of this free festival by making a donation for a festival pin (this year in the shape of a microphone).
